Trained outside the EU/EEA
If you completed your training outside the EU/EEA, find out how to obtain a Swedish professional licence and when you can submit an expression of interest to Region Gävleborg.
If you trained in a regulated healthcare profession outside the EU/EEA, several steps are required before you can apply for a Swedish professional licence. The exact process depends on your profession.
Have your education assessed
The first step is to have your education assessed by Socialstyrelsen. You do not need to know Swedish for your education to be assessed.

Learn Swedish
You need good knowledge of Swedish to work in Swedish healthcare. The accepted ways of demonstrating your language skills include:
- Swedish 3 or Swedish as a Second Language 3
- Swedish at C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
- a course or examination that gives access to higher education in Sweden
- Equivalent knowledge of Danish or Norwegian is also accepted.
Complete the required steps
The licensing process includes a knowledge test, practical training, a course in Swedish laws and regulations and, once all the steps are completed, an application for a Swedish professional licence.
Practical training
After passing the knowledge tests, you need to complete practical training. The length varies depending on the profession. During the placement, you perform tasks that do not require a professional licence.
The purpose is to assess your suitability for the profession and evaluate your professional competence in greater depth in a clinical setting. The placement should include direct contact with patients and collaboration with professionals from other healthcare disciplines.
Submit an expression of interest to Region Gävleborg
You are welcome to submit an expression of interest to Region Gävleborg regardless of which regulated healthcare profession you trained in and where you are in the licensing process.
