“The Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland” have been a World Heritage Site since the summer of 2012, when during its meeting in St. Petersburg the World Heritage Committee took the decision to enter them on the World Heritage List.
This was the result of targeted work in a broad collaboration that had been under way for 17 years. Representatives from Swedish government agencies as well as representatives from the farmhouses nominated took part in the meeting in St. Petersburg.
Outstanding universal value
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee was unanimous that the Hälsingland farmhouses have an outstanding universal value. The farmhouses fill a gap in the World Heritage List, since construction by farmers had previously been underrepresented on the World Heritage List.
Through declaring it a World Heritage Site, the entire world will be able to acquaint itself with Hälsingland’s outstanding culture of construction and decoration.
